The Warri South Local Government Authority gate
By Diana Oluwole
The Warri South Local Government Authority has initiated legal proceedings to seal the Hausa Market in Ugbuwangue and relocate a mosque situated near the pedestrian bridge in the area, citing environmental violations and public safety concerns.
The case, which came up for hearing before Chief Magistrate Ebonwu Asheshe, at the Warri Magistrate Court 3 in Warri South Local Government Area, on February 5, 2025, was filed by the Warri South Environmental Department against the owners and occupiers of both locations.
According to officials, the mosque was built on an unapproved site, raising urban planning concerns. Additionally, the unregulated parking of tricycles by worshippers around the mosque has been flagged as a major safety hazard, with authorities warning that it could lead to accidents and increased traffic congestion in the area.
Similarly, the local government has expressed concerns about the Hausa Market, alleging that its operations fail to comply with environmental regulations. While details of specific violations were not disclosed in court, the move is believed to be part of a broader effort to enforce urban planning laws, improve sanitation, and enhance public safety in the Ugbuwangue area.
However, during the session, the court directed the department to submit a written address supporting its claims and adjourned the matter to Monday, February 10, 2025, for further deliberation.
The legal action has drawn mixed reactions from residents and stakeholders, with some supporting the move for improved order and safety, while others express concerns about the impact on traders and worshippers. (Delta State News Bulletin)
