The Shuwa Arab community in Borno State has petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, over the arrest and detention of 2023 Borno Central Senatorial candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, Attom Magira.

According to the group, Magira Tom was arrested on December 22 by the operatives of the crack unit of Borno State police command.

In the petition dated December 25 and signed by its convener, Saheed Ambagama, the group described the arrest as ?a blatant violation of Magira?s human rights and an attempt to silence his voice as a representative of the people.?

It called on Egbetokun to investigate Magira?s arrest and ensure the protection of his fundamental rights.

The petition read partly, ?The recent arrest and continued illegal detention of Attom Magira Tom by the infamous crack unit of the police in Borno State is a serious affront to democracy and justice.

?Magira Tom, a well-known political figure and advocate for the rights of the poor, has been held for more than 24 hours without due process, raising grave concerns about political persecution in Nigeria?s democratic system.

?Although official reasons for his detention remain unclear, it is widely believed that his recent resignation from the New Nigeria People?s Party and his anticipated alignment with another political platform have unsettled powerful actors in the state.?

The group said Magira?s political ambitions and vibrant advocacy for democracy and justice seemed to have made him a target for intimidation.

?We urge you (Inspector General of Police) to investigate this matter promptly and ensure that Magira?s fundamental human rights are respected and protected,? the group said.

When contacted, the Officer in Charge and Investigating Police Officer of the crack unit confirmed the arrest but refused to give details on the charges against Magira Tom.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Daso Nahum, for a comment on the arrest were unsuccessful.

Nahum did not respond to multiple phone calls and messages seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding Magira?s detention. (Saturday PUNCH, but headline rejigged)
