Governor Alex Otti of Abia State
Abia State Governor Dr. Alex Otti and members of his cabinet were noticeably absent as the Labour Party (LP) launched its campaign for the upcoming November 2, 2024, local government election in Aba. Although Governor Otti has reiterated his allegiance to the LP, it is reported that some of his loyalists have switched to the Zenith Labour Party, contesting the election under its banner.
During the flag-off ceremony, LP?s National Vice Chairman for the South East, Hon. Ceekay Igara, presented flags to the party?s 17 chairmanship candidates. He urged them to remember that their positions are made possible through the party?s platform, advising them to avoid viewing themselves as above the party. He emphasized that all political officeholders are ultimately servants of the party and should operate within its principles.
Igara commended the LP?s open and inclusive candidate selection process in Abia, asserting that the chosen candidates reflect the people?s choice. ?Labour Party believes in letting the people decide,? he stated, explaining that such an approach requires little campaigning, as it resonates with voters.
He also underscored the importance of transparency and accountability within the party, noting that elected members are representatives, not authorities above the LP. ?You are accountable to the party,? he warned candidates, urging them to avoid creating factions or ?cabal-like? structures and to focus on serving the public with integrity.
The state chairman of the LP, Prince Ndubueze, echoed Igara?s sentiments, calling on Governor Otti to ensure a free, fair, and transparent election process. He praised Otti?s achievements in office and emphasized the party?s commitment to upholding democratic principles, including ?one man, one vote.?
The party?s State Youth Leader, Mr. Udo Ihediwa, called on voters to participate actively and defend their choices at the ballot box. He assured that any attempt to manipulate the election would be met with strong resistance.
The LP leadership believes its candidates have strong prospects, noting that the governor?s successes reflect the party?s commitment to governance and public service in Abia. (Vanguard)
