Activists set to “Occupy Central Bank” over N5,000 note

The battle-line seems drawn between the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and activists following the apex bank’s insistence to go ahead with the introduction of 5,000 naira note and coning of 10 and 20 naira.

The move by the CBN has been widely condemned as contradicting the bank’s cashless policy and likely to worsen inflation in the country but the bank insists on going ahead despite the directive by the Senate to suspend the action.

Now activists under the aegis of the Anti Corruption Network have decided to launch a massive protest that would involve physically occupying the CBN’s headquarters in Abuja, the Nigerian capital next Tuesday, September 4.

A short message mobilising Nigerians to support the protest was sent out minutes ago via social network by Hon. Dino Melaye, a former member of the House of Representatives and Coordinator of Anti Corruption Network.

Said Melaye: “You are invited to the protest organized by the Anti Corruption Network, the protest is against the introduction of 5k note by CBN. We are all to meet at the CBN HQ in Abuja on Tuesday 4th September 2012 at 11am prompt. Every onlooker is either a coward or a traitor. Come one come all. Democracy must continue to be government of the people by the people and for the people.”
