Monday Okpebholo, Asue Ighodalo and Olumide Akpata
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Sunday declared Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of Saturday, September 21, governorship election in Edo state.
Okpebholo, 54, secured 291,667 votes to defeat Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 247,274 votes, and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who came a distant third in the race with 22,763 votes.
Here are nine takeaways from the Edo governorship election
1.Social media poll: Elections are not won on social media.
2.Weather: The electorates defied rain and thunderstorms to cast their votes.
3.APC Candidate: The people of Edo choose Monday Okpebholo because he is a grassroots politician and not because of his eloquence. He emerged victorious after securing a total of 291,667.
4.PDP Candidate: Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured a total of 247,274 votes and emerged second in the election.
5.Labour Party performance: Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) failed to win any LGA, securing only 22,763 votes.
6.INEC: The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) played a crucial role in conducting the election as over 96 percent of the results were already uploaded by INEC on the INEC- iRev website by 10 pm on the day of the election.
7.No Disenfranchisement: The old, young, and persons living with disabilities were all allowed to vote, without any form of disenfranchisement during the exercise.
8.Ballot snatching: There were no records of thugs snatching ballot boxes.
9.Philip Shaibu: The defection of the deputy governor Philip Shaibu was a plus for APC. (The Nation)
