Flooded Jigawa community
At least 30 people have been killed, 9,379 hectares of land ravaged and 4,699 houses affected by flood in Jigawa State.
It was observed that this year’s flood is different from the usual one caused by water released from Tiga Dam in Kano. The current flood is as a result of heavy rainswhich affect 90 communities in the state.
It will be recalled that NiMET had predicted that Jigawa was among the states that would experience severe flood in 18 local government areas of the state.
Dr. Haruna Mairiga, the Executive Secretary Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, said the state government was assisting those affected with thousands of bags of rice, maize, millet, Gari, and medication.
Mairiga said two children died and others infected with diarrhoea (amai da gudawa) at Yanduna Primary School Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs’) camp in Miga and Ayo LGAs.
He said local government emergency committees were working day and night in assisting the victims.
Azumi Garba Tsakuwawa, who took shelter at tsakuwawa Junior Secondary School, said her family did not have adequate food until the government came to their aid.
Another victim, Aisha Yakubu Tsakuwawa, thanked the state government for quick response and assistance. Yakubu said she flood destroyed his family’s property. (Daily Trust)
