Late legendary journalist, High Chief Sampson Iheanyi Amaku SamPen

Nigerian journalism has lost one of its elder statesmen. High Chief Sampson Iheanyi Amaku, popularly known as SamPen, is no more.
The legendary journalist based in Enugu passed away on Monday, June 10, 2024, at the age of 86, after a brief illness.
News of his death was contained in a statement signed by Mrs Comfort Amaku and Mr Henry Amaku. The news has since thrown the media in Enugu and neighbouring states into mourning.
A one-time City Editor of Daily Times Newspapers in the 1970s, the late veteran journalist hailed from Eziama Ancient Kingdom, in Isiala Mbano Local government Area of lmo State.
The legendary journalist was the state Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the defunct East Central State. It was during his time as Chairman that the then Administrator of East Central State, Ajie Ukpabi Asika, donated the present NUJ Press Centre, Enugu – the building and the entire outer space.
One remarkable thing about the legendary journalist was that he loved journalism from the heart and practised till the very end. He was still publishing news reports and commentaries online until he fell sick. His last post in Onu-Igbo WhatsApp platform where he was an active member, was on June 5.
Journalists have been paying glowing tributes to him both online and at the Enugu Press Centre ahead of the announcement of his burial date expected to be announced soon by his family.
