Delta State Commissioner of Police Surajudeen Olufemi Abanikanda
A group under the aegis of Achi Grassroots Mobilizers, AGM has raised the alarm over the unlawful arrest and detention of Melvin Chukwunweike, who it alleged was abducted in the early hours of last Saturday and whisked away by men in police uniform, urging Delta State Commissioner of Police Surajudeen Olufemi Abanikanda to warn his men against being used by politicians to harass youths in the state.
AGM also called on the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwhori to immediately call his appointee (names withheld) into the board of the Delta State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, DESOPADEC, to order, who it alleged is using law enforcement agencies to harass, intimidate and oppress Ukwani youths.
Founder of the social-political pressure group, Henrison Achi, in a statement made available to Vanguard on Tuesday accused the DESOPADEC official of reckless use of operatives of the Nigeria Police from Igbuzor, a police formation he argued is faraway from Umutu division to arrest and detain Chukwunweike.
The statement called on the governor to warn his aide seriously against intimidating the youth population of Ukwani Local Government Area, citing what he described as unlawful arrest and detention of Melvin Chukwunweike, who was allegedly abducted in the early hours of last Saturday and whisked away by these men in police uniform.
Achi stressed further that it took the entire community until Monday searching for Chukwunweike’s whereabouts until it was revealed that the official on the board of the state’s intervention agency brought police personnel to hound Chukwunweike into detention in far away Igbuzor, without any official report to the Divisional Police headquarters in the agrarian community of Umutu.
The Achi-led group said, at the moment, the police and Enebeli are in dilemma as to what to charge Chukwunweike for having unlawfully detained him without end for five days running.
“Up until now, the Police couldn’t charge him to court but chose to unlawfully keep him behind the bars innocently. We demand his immediate and unconditional release now.”
According to Achi, “The said official (names withheld) was graciously appointed by the governor onto the board of the Commission to grow and develop his constituency, constituents and not to incessantly harass and intimidate his people using supposed law enforcement agencies for their absurdity,” warning, “Should the official continue in his rascality, the youths may resist him in future.” (Vanguard)
