Gunmen suspected to be members of one of the cult groups in Awka, Anambra State capital, went on rampage on Friday, robbing POS operators and tricycle drivers in their park at Regina Caeli junction along Enugu-Onitsha expressway.

The gunmen stole phones and money from the keke drivers and passengers. They also robbed POS operators at Eke-Awka axis and collected the operators’ money and phones.

Narrating the incident, an eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of attack said: “The gunmen stormed the keke park with tricycles armed with guns and ordered all the Keke drivers and passengers to lie down and collected their money.

“Those who carried the operations are suspected to be cult boys from Awka.

“The park has been paying some amount to certain individuals every week and the park operators had not paid since this January. I don’t want to name the big people collecting the money.”

Also an insider who also pleaded anonymity said that they have been paying N30,000 weekly to some people but refused to mention their names.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Tochukwu Ikenga, could not be reached for his reaction as his mobile phone could not be reached.
