FRIN students protesting at EFCC Ibadan zonal command
The South-West chapter of the National Association of Nigerians Students (NANS) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Inspector General of Police (IGP), Egbetokun Olukayode, following the “unlawful invasion” of Federal Research Institute of Nigeria (FRIN), Ibadan, by the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
It wasearlier reportedthat the EFCC operatives invaded the school on Tuesday, October 24, with no reason to justify their operation.
It was further gathered the operatives allegedly shot sporadically into the air, making the staffers and students scamper for safety.
But ina latest development, NANS Coordinator of South-West Zone D, Comrade Alao John in an exclusive interviewon Wednesday, asked President Bola Tinubu to reform the Commission.
“I was having meeting with the SUG President (name withheld) at Block C when I saw them (EFCC operatives) barged into the school premises. After I challenged them, I asked someone to take their videos and we have everything as evidence.
“They never sought the consent of the school management and the students union and were not able to explain reason for invading the school.
“We are calling on the government of Federal Republic of Nigeria under the leadership of our able President Bola Tinubu to reform EFCC because we see this as a medium of sabotaging his renewed hope agenda.
“We are also giving the IGP 48 hours to apprehend those EFCC officials. We havecirculated their photos and videos on social media,” he said.
On her part, Azelu Patience, who spoke on behalf of the SUG claimed one of the students was injured during the invasion while calling on the authority concerned to look into the matter.
“Someof the EFCC officials came with guns shooting sporadically at harmless students protesting their invasion. One of our students sustained injury in the process but is currently at a nearby hospital as I speak,” she disclosed.
Efforts to reach the Head ofPublic Affairs Department (EFCC) Ibadan zonal command, EFCC Egbodofo Olumide, proved abortive as at press time.
Our reporter was also denied access to the Commission’s spokesperson when he visited the EFCC Ibadan zonal office in the wee hours of Wednesday.(Tribune)
