Hawkers and traders returned to the Lagos State Red Line right of way in Agege on Friday evening, displaying their wares along the rail tracks, as reported by the Saturday Tribune.

When Tribune Online correspondent passed through the Agege rail crossing around 5 p.m. on Friday, the traders were seen displaying their wares on the rail tracks despite warnings and clearance carried out last Saturday by the Lagos State Government.

Recall that the Lagos State government began clearing shanties and makeshift structures along the Red Rail Line city project last Saturday, aiming to reclaim the right of way (ROW) within the Red Rail Line corridors from Agbado, Agege, and Ebute-Metta, Lagos.

The enforcement team, which cleared the rail corridor, including the Agege railway crossing, was led by the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr Oluyinka Olumide.

Olumide was accompanied by the Special Adviser, e-GIS and Urban Development, Dr Olajide Babatunde; the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), Mr Gbolahan Oki; and senior directors of both the agency and ministry.

LASBCA is an agency under the Lagos State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

The enforcement started from the Lateef Jakande Station, Agbado, on the Lagos-Ogun boundary and continued through Iju to Babatunde Fashola Station, Agege.

All makeshift stalls along rail lines were removed, permanent structures, including four new-generation churches, were partially demolished, and other encroachments were removed.

Also, Tribune Online reports that the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, visited the areas, warning the traders against turning the rail track to marketplace for their own safety. (Nigerian Tribune)
