The police have raided the head office of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Abuja, and arrested officials, including the union president, Tajudeen Baruwa.

Others arrested are General Secretary, Anthony Asogwa Chukudi; Olayi Odion; and National Trustee, Principal Assistant Secretary, Abdulrasak Yemi.

Security operatives reportedly invaded the secretariat and asked all the occupants to vacate the building, on Friday.

The union on Wednesday, August 9 issued a statement alleging plans by some people to stage a violent protest at the secretariat ahead of the delegates conference slated for Saturday.

On Saturday, NURTW confirmed the sealing off of its National Secretariat located at Garki 2 Abuja.

The Deputy President of the union, Mr. Isa Ore who confirmed the development while addressing journalists said armed policemen invaded the premises.

Isa who expressed shock over the development said they were not given any reason for the action.

He said the union was preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected members of the National Administrative Council when the police arrived and ordered the staff to vacate and sealed off the premises

According to him, “We were shocked to see the policemen in their number locking our secretariat without giving them a reason.

“Today Saturday, we are preparing for the inauguration and swearing-in of the newly elected National Administrative Council members but we just saw security operatives and they asked us to leave the premises. They said it was an order from the above.” (Text, excluding headlines: Daily Trust)
