President Buhari
•Condemns killings of Kano Monarch, DPO in Zamfara by terrorists
Even as President Muhammadu Buhari at the weekend vowed to end all forms of insecurity in the country before bowing out of office on May 29, a Civil Rights Advocacy group- Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has told the President that his words mean nothing to millions of Nigerians who have heard same empty and irrelevant promises in the last eight years.
This, according to HURIWA, was because after such promises, terrorists, bandits, armed herdsmen and kidnappers would yet continue to unleash devastating violence against soft targets all across Nigeria.
The group recalled that the President, who spoke from his country home in Daura, Katsina State, while virtually inaugurating 700 Ashok Leyland’s Troop-Carrying Vehicles assembled in Lagos, said his regime remained committed to winning the war against terrorism and other forms of insecurity and would stop at nothing to ensure citizens have a new Nigeria free from insecurity.
The rights group recalled too that President Muhammadu Buhari said: “I wish to commend the resolve of our armed forces towards the defeat of insurgency and its support in maintaining law and order as was demonstrated in the just concluded Presidential and National Assembly elections. The war against terrorism and criminality in the country will be sustained and boosted with supplies of hardware and better care for the security outfits."
HURIWA which described the government of President Muhammadu Buhari as a spectacular failure in the area of safeguarding lives and property of the citizens all across the country, wondered whether President Muhammadu Buhari himself takes out some of his private times to sneak out from his cocoons, disguise as a commoner to feel the pulse and heartbeat of the generality of Nigerians and to hear first hand from most ordinary Nigerians how their right to life, freedom of movement and other fundamental human rights have been impacted adversely by the activities of dare-devil armed non-state actors responsible for some 30,000 extra-legal killings since the last eight years.
HURIWA said it seemed the administration lacked conscience and a sense of shame, otherwise, the President wouldn't be repeating himself over 100 times in the media; making same deliberately unattainable promises to end terrorism and violence in the country which escalated due to inaction and ineffectiveness of his government but could have proceeded to let actions speak for the administration by delivering swift justice to terrorists and the masterminds of all the bloody attacks all around Nigeria, rather than playing to the gallery just because the government bought few military hardware which most other nations less endowed than Nigeria are even producing completely and not coupling or assembling in their home industries.
“Just few hours after President Muhammadu Buhari made the political statement on ending the spate of insecurity before his inglorious exit from government, he has jetted out of Nigeria to Qatar to attend one funny conference that wouldn't enrich Nigerians in any form or shape but just to satisfy President's insatiable thirsts for globetrotting and probably due to the juicy allowances that follow those frivolous foreign trips. And as the President jetted off to the Middle East, the head of Maigari village in Rimin Gado Local Government Area of Kano State, Dahiru Abba, was shot dead by terrorists and a Divisional Police Officer in Zamfara State was similarly killed by terrorists," HURIWA said in a statement signed by its National Director, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko.
HURIWA accused the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari of engaging in hide-and-seek gambit with the North West terror masterminds who are mostly Fulanis like himself and have been deliberately left to hibernate around Zamfara, Katsina, Sokoto and Kebbi States, added that hardly can any rational minded Nigerian take the words of the President to end terrorism for anything meaningful because these terrorists have been allowed to operate freely in the North West and these bandits have only just killed the Divisional Police Officer in Maru LGA, Superintendent of Police Kazeem Raheem, who was murdered alongside two other Policemen.
“HURIWA is therefore asking President Muhammadu Buhari as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to inform Nigerians why the Armed forces under his command and control have failed to apprehend any of the 19 terrorists declared wanted by the Defence headquarters since November last year just as the Rights group said it is shameful that many of those terror masterminds so declared wanted are known to be parading about in different parts of the North West and even when the Air Force claims to have bombarded the forests all of these real kingpins of terrorism are never affected by such bombing campaigns and these terrorist masterminds are even attending social and religious functions in the North West,” the statement concluded.
