PDP chieftain Emma Nwaka
A former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State, Senator Emma Nwaka, has stormed a Federal High Court in the FCT Abuja, seeking to annul the February 4, 2023 rerun primary election held at Umuahia Township Stadium which produced Chief Ambrose Okechukwu Ahiwe as replacement for the original candidate, the late Prof. Uche Ikonne.
Ahiwe, the immediate past Chief of Staff to Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, was not a candidate in the initial primary election of May 25, 2022 which produced late Prof. Ikonne, a situation which, according to Nwaka, disqualifies him from consideration.
In a suit filed today, Thursday, February 16, 2023, Nwaka is seeking an order for a rerun that will involve only those who participated in the primary election of May 25, 2022, or the quashing of the rerun primary that produced Ahiwe – meaning that PDP may have no candidate in the March 11 governorship election.
“There is no room for new entrants. That is what the law says,” according to Nwaka, who contested the primaries and insists that it was wrong for Ahiwe to have been allowed to contest the rerun primary.
The defendants in the suit filed on behalf of Nwaka by Abuja law firm Ikechukwu Ezechukwu SAN & Co., are PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Ahiwe himself.
No date has been assigned for the hearing of the suit.
