A newly married man, Alhaji Nura Gambo, has told a sharia court in Kano that his wife, Fatima Bashir Khalil, should pay him N10 million before he could grant her request for divorce.
Gambo said the money represents the amount he spent to marry his divorce-seeking wife.
Media reports say that the woman, popularly known as Yar Albarka, was dragged before a Kano State sharia court sitting in the Post Office area for pouring cold water on her husband for refusing to give her money to celebrate her birthday.
The cold water, Yar Albarka poured on her husband, made him to become ill. She therefore was arraigned by the Police before Justice Nazifi Adam on a three-count charge of violation of human right, breach of trust and deception.
Counsel to the husband, Badamasi Gandu, told the court that the defendant demanded some money from his client to celebrate her birthday, which he refused, and that after that she decided to injure him and later sought for divorce.
Gandu also told the court that for his client to divorce his wife, she should pay him N10m which he spent in the process of marrying her.
However, when Yar Albarka pleaded not guilty to the charges, the court admitted her to bail on the grounds that she was still the wife of the plaintiff and adjourned the matter to March 3, 2023.
