Injured Peter ObiLP supporters
Supporters of Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, who were attacked by political thugs during his mega campaign rally in Lagos yesterday, Saturday, February 11, 2023, did not only suffer bodily harm but also lost their possessions in the process.
News Expressran into some of the victims, who travelled from outside Lagos to attend the rally, at the hotel where they lodged (name withheld) along Murtala Muhammed International Airport Road, Ajao Estate.
Lamenting their ordeal, they disclosed that their mobile phones were also taken by their attackers who pounced on them as they made their way to the mega rally held at Tafawa Balewa Square on Lagos Island. Attempts to get them to speak at length on their ordeal failed as they hurried off to the banks in a bid to block their account numbers.
Hours after the incident, the Lagos Police Command confirmed that four injured persons received medical attention after the attack.
According to a tweet by the State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Benjamin Hundeyin, “Jakande Ward Chairman of the Labour Party commendably reported an attack on his party members at Ilasan Division. Four injured persons have been given medical attention. DPO Ilasan has commenced preliminary investigations while SCID is to fully take over investigations,” he said in a tweet.
“The injured and other witnesses are assisting the Police with relevant information that would aid the apprehension and prosecution of the attackers.”
Describing the attack as “reprehensible!” the PPRO added: “It is verifiable that the Command had stationed, since yesterday, patrol vehicles and officers at the Tafawa Balewa Square venue of today’s rally. We had already secured the venue to prevent any breakdown of law and order.
“The regrettable attack happened about 15km away from the rally venue. As earlier stated, the SCID will take over investigations towards apprehending and prosecuting the attackers.”
