Ag CAN, Tambuwal
The Concerned Legislative Aides, both at the Senate and House of Representatives, have appealed to the Acting Clerk of the National Assembly (CAN), Sani Magaji Tambuwal, to consider the lingering salary arrears and allowances owed legislative aides from 2019 till date.
The legislative aide at the National Assembly urged Tambuwal not to toe what they called draconian policies of his predecessor, Amos Olatunde Ojo.
They made the call against the background of speculations that there were ongoing plans to pay allowances of core staff of the National Assembly and National Assembly Service Commission (NASC).
Legislative aides sources who craved anonymity, said they have protested too long over non-payment of their allowances, ranging from duty tour allowances (DTA), minimum wages, among others, to salary arrears, from June to December 2019.
They therefore appealed to the new Ag CAN to turn a new leaf in his administration by ending the age-long discrimination and administrative anomalies being meted to legislative aides of federal lawmakers.
“We are political appointees; why not treat us like our principals rather than shortchanging us by withholding our entitlements already appropriated in the budgets since 2019,” one of the legislative aides said.
“With few months to the end of the 9thAssembly, we are begging the Ag. CAN, Sani Magaji Tambuwal, that this is an opportunity to write his name in gold, by moing away from the former CAN, Amos Olatunde Ojo’s ill-advised draconian policies.”
The legislative aides said they have explored all necessary avenues, including involving the anti-graft agencies with no positive response, warning the Ag. CAN not allow the out-gone CAN “to get away with the slush funds.”
The concerned legislative aides said they were sad because of the position of its leadership, which it accused of appearing of being compromised about the welfare of its members.
They expressed confidence in the new leadership, adding that with their wealth of experience and administrative wizardry, they would positively steer the ship of the National Assembly management.
