Governor Wike
As January 2023 ends today, a socio-political group, Rescue Nigeria Economy Project (RNEP), has charged Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, to courageously announce his preferred presidential candidate in line with his earlier promise.
The group, in a statement signed by its Executive Secretary, Dennis Alamu-George, said that from the look of things, Wike is in a dilemma as the G-5 members are now divided along interest lines.
It will be recalled that Wike had said he will make his preferred presidential candidate known in January 2023. He also said that he will campaign for his adopted candidate nationwide.
“From January next year, I will campaign to my people whom they will vote for,” Wike said when he commissioned the tenth flyover by his administration in the Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers.
“So, all of you who have been in suspense, who have been saying all kinds of things, abusing me, wait. January is here.
“Not only will I tell them (my people) whom to vote, I will move from state to state (for campaigns) and why they should vote for the person, nothing will happen,” he said.
According to RNEP, Wike may lose the respect of many Nigerians, especially the people of Rivers if he fails to honour his words.
“With today being the 30th day of January 2023, we hereby call on Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike not to forget his promise to name his preferred presidential candidate in January. He shouldn’t disappoint Nigerians who have been kept in suspense since he made the comment.
“While we agree with the fact that the month of January ends on Tuesday the 31st, we are through this statement reminding the governor to live up to his words and announce his preferred presidential candidate and campaign with him nationwide as promised.
“However, if he feels there are still issues to be ironed out and will need more time for an extension just like the Central Bank of Nigeria did with the Naira redesign, he should say so now before the January deadline he gave expires”.
