The Nigeria Immigrations Service (NIS), has received equipment worth millions of naira to promote service delivery, especially as regards border security as the nation gears up for the general elections.

The equipment was donated to the NIS by the management of HIS Towers Nigeria, an international Telecoms infrastructure company.

The General elections will hold in February and March 2013 and all Nigerian borders are expected to be closed during the exercise.

While receiving the equipment, the NIS Comptroller General, Mr Isah Jere Idris, said the donation came at the right time when the country is preparing for the general elections, adding that the Service had the responsibility to ensure the closure of the borders and ensure the integrity of the polls.

He said: “This indeed is a great support that will further enhance the capacity of the NIS to perform better in his mandate. In a nutshell, this modern communication equipment will entrench a more efficient and effective integration and interconnectivity between the service formations and the headquarters.

“This will enhance secured communication as part of our efforts towards emplacing border patrol operations and strategies to combat the growing trend of irregular migration.

“This support is also coming at a very important time, particularly as the Service is deploying integrated internal monitoring and controlling mechanisms ahead of the fast approaching 2023 elections.”

The CG promised that the equipment which included 25 Motorola high-performance base stations, 155 Walky Talkies and other high-performance communication gadgets, would be put to the best use, especially during the general elections.

Earlier, the CEO of the company, Dr Mohammad Darwish, who made the donation at the service headquarters in Abuja, stated that his organisation had been working closely with the telecom industry in Nigeria for the past 21 years and had provided employment to over 40,000 Nigerians directly and indirectly.
