LAGOS – The Eastern Union (EU), a political pressure group, has endorsed the aspira­tion of Mr. Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP).

Hon. Charles Anike, the EU National Presi­dent, in a statement said that in deciding to sup­port Peter Obi, the EU leadership considered his excellent performance in all sectors when he held sway as the Anambra State governor.

He said: “It is on record that Obi left Anambra far better than he met it, saved a lot of money, both in the banks and in the form of investments.

“Peter Obi laid a strong foundation for his succes­sor, Willie Obiano and now, Prof Charles Soludo. His exceptional performance made him to be appointed a Member of the Federal Government’s Economic Team at a time.

“Peter Obi, a renowned businessman, is well versed in the management of resources and under him, the nation will be on a sure march towards El­dorado.”

He stressed that Presi­dency had for long eluded South East, leading led to strong cries of marginalization and restiveness in the region.

According to him, “Pe­ter Obi’s election as pres­ident will help to assuage this feeling, especially among the Igbo and make them have a sense of be­longing, erase the vestiges of the Nigerian civil war and unify the country the more.

“The EU notes that all the opinion polls carried out so far by credible organizations put Peter Obi in the lead far above the other frontline contend­ers.

“Since his consulta­tions and the campaigns proper, Obi has continued to explain in practical terms how he will pull out the nation from its present quagmire, even as several professional groupings, the Ohanaeze, Afenifere, the Middle Belt, Niger Del­ta and a cross section of the Arewa have all given their tacit support to Obi/ Datti ticket.

“It is the EU belief that with Peter Obi on the driv­er’s seat, Nigeria will re­cover faster economically as there will be prudence, transparency and account­ability in the management of resources while the huge debts the current administrators plunged the nation into, will be liquidated fast while there will be solutions to the myriad of problems the nation had been grappling with, including terrorism, crimes and criminali­ty, mass unemployment, flooding, among others.
