Pastor Agu Irukwu
Unknown to most people, it was not only ministers of the Anglican Church that officiated during Monday’s funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history who died aged 96 at Balmoral, Scotland, on September 8, 2022.
Eight pastors representing the churches in England were also selected by Buckingham Palace and top on the list was Pastor Agu Irukwu, son of Nigerian insurance guru, Prof Joe Irukwu, and Senior Pastor of Jesus House, United Kingdom, an arm of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which has its headquarters in Nigeria.
A graduate of the University of Warwick, Coventry, UK, Agu Irukwu is married to Pastor Shola Irukwu and was an investment banker before going into full-time ministry.
He is the second Nigerian known to have officiated at the Queen’s funeral, the first being Samuel Nwokoro, a Commonwealth Student and Assistant Minister, who offered prayers at St Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, during the full order of service for thanksgiving for the Queen on Monday, September 12.
The 96-year-old Queen’s funeral, which climaxed with her burial at Windsor Castle on Monday evening, was graced by a galaxy of world leaders and is estimated to have been watched by over four billion people globally.
