Ndigbo Lagos, the Umbrella organization of Igbo groups in Lagos, has called for honest implementation of the Electoral Act even as it commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Electoral Act Amendment Bill into law on Friday, February 25, 2022.

“By signing the Bill, Mr President acted as a patriot and national leader, thereby booking a place for himself in Democracy Hall of Fame. We congratulate him,” Ndigbo Lagos said in a statement signed by the President-General, Gen. Obi Abel Umahi (Rtd), and Secretary General, Chief Chuma Igwe.

It noted in the statement issued over the weekend that “during the signing ceremony, Mr President alluded to certain sections he did not like and we applaud him for respecting the will of the majority of Nigerians by signing the Bill despite his objection to some provisions of the Bill.”

According to Ndigbo Lagos, “For us the Electoral Bill is a response to many lessons we have learnt over the past two decades of our democratic experiences and we think that without the Electoral Act in place, the conduct of the 2023 general elections would be in serious danger of being compromised.

“By signing this Electoral Bill into law, it is expected that its honest implementation by all stakeholders (INEC, political parties, politicians, judiciary, security agencies, Nigerian voters, CSOs etc) will hopefully jointly and severally do stuff according to the extant laws to correct ills and shames of our previous elections across the country.”
