Anambra Speaker Uche Okafor
By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Some members of Anambra State House of Assembly have kicked against the approval of Governor Willie Obiano’s request to borrow N18.2 billion from the Federal Government.
Member representing Ogbaru 1 Constituency, Hon. Chukwunonso Nobel Igwe, who was among the lawmakers that kicked against the approval, wondered what the governor will do with such amount of money when he has barely three months to leave office.
Speaking to journalists after the plenary session on Wednesday, Igwe said: “I am not totally against the loan, but against the process. There’s no way the governor will take a loan for the state without stating categorically what he intends to do with the loan.
“It is not in the best practices interest. He has to state what he intends to use the money for. So that he can be checkmated and tracked to know if it was used judiciously.
“This is why we kicked against it. Even though the voice vote was against taking the loan, but they ruled us out. It’s not fair. The house has passed it and for people like me who are against it, nothing can be done.
“Another reason why we are agitating is because we want the governor to furnish the house of assembly.
“This is a loan the Federal Government gives to all the state. Other states stated what they want to do with the loan.”
Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Okafor, had at plenary read out a letter from Obiano requesting for the approval for the state to secure N18,225,336,103.89 loan from the Federal Government.
Majority Leader and member representing Awka South 1 Constituency, Hon. Nnamdi Okafor, after moving the motion was seconded by member representing Orumba North Constituency, Hon Emeka Aforka.
