The remains of 33-year-old David Atimbi Adi, a native of Nyakala Igbak, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, ‘vanished’ from the mortuary of the Bingham University Teaching Hospital (BUTH), Jos on Wednesday.

Irate family members of the deceased, who had arrived in the morning to collect his body, locked the gates of the hospital not allowing access into the facility as they demanded the management of the hospital give them the missing corpse.

The corpse was deposited at BUTH on Thursday last week and meant to be buried on Wednesday (today), but the family on getting to the mortuary at 8 a.m. to collect the body for the burial, were stunned when they could not find his corpse.

Brother of the deceased, Mr Paul Atimbi, said they had gone to the BUTH mortuary where they deposited his brother corpse only to discover that the corpse was not in the mortuary.

Paul said that after mounting pressure on the hospital’s management it was later discovered that the mortuary attendant had mistakenly released the corpse to a different family had taken the body since Monday and had buried it in another Village of Bassa LGC called Mista Ali.

After arguing back and forth, the hospital’s management had the body exhumed and brought back to the hospital where it was identified as the real corpse of David before it was handed over to the family and was taken in the late afternoon for burial in Bassa.

The Chief Medical Director of BUTH, Prof. Stephen Anzaku when contacted explained the problem was as result of the mislabelling of the two corpses by the morticians on duty last Thursday.
