The Police Area Command in the industrial city of Nnewi, Anambra State, has come under heavy attack from suspected unknown gunmen following the killing of two men earlier on Monday morning.
The victims, a member of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) and a motorcycle rider were allegedly gunned down during a confrontation at the Izuchukwu area of Nnewi roundabout.
It was gathered that the confrontation was triggered by the removal of blockades put along the road to prevent commuters from plying the road in compliance with the sit-at-home order by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
Sources who spoke to News Express said that the unknown gunmen went to the police station in seven vehicles and started shooting for over one hour.
According to one source, the gunmen overpowered the police, killed four police officers and carted away their arms.
He said that the attackers had left before reinforcement from other security agencies arrived the scene.
When contacted, the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, said: “Anambra Police operatives successfully repelled an attack in Nnewi Area Command.
“Meanwhile, police and other security agencies are currently there and the situation is under control and further information will be communicated.”
