The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), on Sunday, called on motorists to exercise patience and accommodate other road users within the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.
The Director-General of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, made the call whileflagging off the Special Operation Eagle Eyes at Four-Corner Junction along Enugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port-Harcourt Road in Enugu.
Ahmed, represented by South-East Coordinator of NEMA, Mr James Eze, said that the Special Operation Eagle Eyes tagged: “Safe Eid-el-Kabir’’ would last for five days, from July 18 to July 22.
He said that the Agency was deploying 25 staff for the operation; some specialized rescue vehicles and an ambulance to attend to road emergencies during the period.
The Director-General said that the operation would cover patrols on major road corridors in the South-East; which included: Enugu-Abakaliki Road, Enugu-Awka-Onitsha Road, Enugu-9thMile-Nsukka-Obollo-Afor Road andEnugu-Umuahia-Aba-Port-Harcourt Road.
Ahmed said that the Agency staff had been positioned to sensitise road users on the need to embrace safety measures and lower their speed level during the Sallah celebration.
He said: ``The operation in collaboration with other stakeholders and law enforcement agencies is aimed at reducing road accidents and other emergencies on roads.
"We want everyone road user to be safety conscious and be patient with one another.
"Why we have road accidents most times is due to lack of patience for other road users as well as being in a hurry when journeys are started late.
``Please, the Federal Government through NEMA wants every Nigerian to be alive this Sallah period by taking responsibility of his or her safety and safety of others round as well.
``NEMA’s operation first responders are already on the major road corridors to given assistance and helping hands where and when necessary to ensure we celebrate in life and health as well.’’
The NEMA boss also appreciated the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), other national and local security and enforcement agencies for their synergy with the Agency to ensure the success of the operation.
