The Cultural Credibility Development Initiative (CDDI) has reacted to the rearrest of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

Kanu was arrested on Sunday and brought to Nigeria, the country’s attorney general Abubakar Malami said on Tuesday.

The IPOB leader subsequently appeared before Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

The IPOB leader is facing a sleuth of charges, most of which are connected to his call for the independence of the southeastern region of Nigeria.

Kanu’s movement, IPOB, which agitates for a separate state for ethnic Igbos in southeast Nigeria, has also been labeled a terrorist organisation by the Nigerian government.

Reacting to the development on Wednesday through a statement jointly signed by its President, Chief Goddy Uwazurike, Secretary, Steve Nwabuko, CCDI urged the government to align the trial of Kanu with human rights and freedom of the judiciary so as to make its decisions on point of law.

The group who raised questions on how Nnamdi Kanu was brought back to Nigeria also asked if his extradition was in accordance with International laws and conventions among other issues.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has fundamental rights under Section 31 of the Nigerian Constitution and Article 4 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples Rights?and the Federal Government should comply with both.

“With the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, the supposed reason for the increased siege to the South East, Cultural Credibility Development Initiative expects remarkable reduction in the security presence that is resulting in loss of lives in the South East.

“Cultural Credibility Development Initiative looks forward to a trial that aligns with human rights and the freedom of the judiciary to make its decisions on point of law. Security agents should desist from harassment of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s associates, including his lawyers.

“We are committed to peace, but it must be noted that no peace can be founded within injustice. As Justice Chukwudifu Oputa, of blessed memory, would say, “Justice must not only be done but must be seen to have been done”.

The group said that the media, civil society organizations, and the Nigerian Bar Association should and must be fully allow at the trials.

CDDI however, warned the Nigerian Security agents to desist from harassing the IPOB leader and his associates.
