Ex-President Obasanjo
By JOHN NWOKOCHA, Abuja
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has cleared the air on why the outcome of their meeting is being delayed.
Obasanjo and other prominent Nigerians, elder statesmen, comprising former Heads of State and President, former Chief Justice of Nigeria, former National Security Adviser, organised Labour, academia, women and groups representatives, met on Thursday, June 10, in Abuja, under the aegis of Committee for Goodness of Nigeria (CGN).
News Express gathered that the meeting which lasted several hours behind closed-door deliberated on issues of security, economy, welfare, well-being and unity and progress of Nigeria.
Nigerians have awaited the outcome of their meeting with bated breath as heated discussions in public space as to whether CGN will address the troubling questions take the center stage.
But Obasanjo said: “We decided that our communique won’t be issued until after submitting our report to the President.”
Obasanjo said that President Buhari was duly notified of the meeting and its agenda before its commencement. He added that members of CGN agreed in principle to formally present their resolutions to Buhari before making it public.
According to News Express sources, the former president said: “We spoke frankly amongst ourselves after discussing relevant issues of security and economy. We were long on statements but short on action.”
He said further that Nigerians would soon understand the motive of the meeting of the coalition through its actions.
His words: “Actions on our part and other people’s part that are of immediate requirements, you will be seeing them.
“We pledge to ourselves to change the narratives, we have to start building confidence and be reaching out. From now on, you will hear from our actions on the outcome of our deliberations.”
He also said they acknowledged the letter written by President Buhari in response to the group’s letter informing him (Buhari) about their meeting and his goodwill message that the outcome of our meeting will be of interest to him.
When News Express persuaded one of the insiders, an ally of Obasanjo for his response he said he would not speak until the communique is made public.
News Express learnt that former President Goodluck Jonathan, Professor Wole Soyinka, Emeka Anyaoku couldn’t physical attend the meeting. However, they sent apologies.
