Civil rights advocacy group, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently take practical, verifiable and transparent steps to resolve the widening and expanding frontiers of insecurities of all varieties afflicting millions of Nigerian citizenry.

The rights group lamented that Nigeria of 2021 is afflicted by monumental cases of food insecurity, job insecurity, human insecurity, energy/fuel insecurity, and the rising spate of security threats and breaches on the Nigerian schools and the abductions of citizens which constitute grave crimes against humanity.

HURIWA therefore called on the government to declare as terrorist groups the armed Fulani herdsmen and militia who are abducting school children all over the country, while carpeting the Federal Executive Council for its inability to nip in the bud the foods and meat blockades imposed unilaterally by a Northern based cattle trade union.

“We think that the time is very ripe for Mr. President to review his economic, political and agricultural blueprints with a view to introducing and ensuring the implementation of programmes, projects and initiatives that have excellent utilitarian value to the greatest percentage of Nigerians,” the rights group said.

HURIWA also charged President Buhari to carry out immediate forensic audits of the workings of all his political appointees "with a view to sacking all those who have constituted heavy clogs in the economic wheel of progress in the job, energy, agricultural and public procurement sectors of the economy, adding that the President needs to sack about 50 percent of his cabinet Ministers for non-performance.

The rights group lamented that corruption and crass incompetence has opened up Nigeria to the vagaries of ethno-religious divisions to an extent that agricultural producers based largely in the North are blackmailing Nigerian citizens living in the South with a blockade of all agricultural products even when crude oil supplies which is the source of Nigeria’s revenue come from the South and the revenues are redistributed across board irrespective of the location of the subnational entity.

HURIWA asked President Buhari to bring to an end the unilateral foods blockades by the North against the South or stop the redistribution of crude oil resources to the North of Nigeria.

“We urge the President to be a statesman and change his cabinet and bring in Nigerians competent enough to work as patriots to bridge the yawning gaps between Northern and Southern Nigeria so as to stop any imminent civil strife.

“We blame the absence of reputable statesmen and women in the current Federal cabinet for the rising cases of political squabbles and discord threatening to tear apart Nigeria. Imagine a cabinet whereby the Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami and the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Council on Corruption, Professor Itse Sagay, are busy exchanging unprintable words with the Justice Minister calling Professor Sagay an old man with delusions whereas the Professor says Malami keeps friends with criminals and who will undermine the workings of EFCC.

“A house that is divided cannot stand. How will Nigeria make progress when corruption, executive lawlessness, gross indiscipline, and squabbles are the hallmarks of the Federal Executive Council?”
