BPP inducts new staff in Kuje Prison

The Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) on Saturday led a team of new recruits into the Federal Civil Service to the Kuje minimum security prison in the Federal Capital Territory as part of efforts to reduce criminality in the system.

Addressing journalists during the exercise, the Director for Finance and Management Services, Dr Chris Iwuagwu, said the essence of bringing the new employees to the prison was to show them what life in prison was like, with a view to instilling discipline in them.

He affirmed that the practice of bringing new staff to the prison has helped to reduce criminality in the system.

During the visit, the Deputy Comptroller of Prison, Mr Musa Tanko expressed displeasure over the congestion in the prison.

Although the Kuje Prison has a capacity for 500, there are over 800 inmates there. Out of this number, only 142 are convicted, the remaining 695 inmates are awaiting trial.
