The eldest man and Okpako-Orere of Iwhrekan Community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Chief Johnson Gbemre, has petitioned the state Commissioner of Police, Baba Usman Alkali, alleging threat to his life by a group in the community.
Chief Gbemre, 91, in the petition, alleged through his legal counsel, Cyril Ojiemen, that on the 20th of April, 2015, a group of youths, numbering 30 and led by Messrs Edirin Gbemre, Monday Esiri, Charwoko Gbemre, Morrison Ogbariemu, Kingsley Esiri, British Oshevire as well as Godwin Gbagbeke, invaded his residence at Jigbe quarters in the community.
In a copy of the petition made available to journalists, Chief Gbemre asserted that the youths purportedly acting on the instruction of one Mr. Zik Gbemre, threatened to destroy his house, beat and kill him before the presentation of staff of office and eventual swearing in of the new executive members of the community.
The nonagenarian, who appealed to the police to come his aid, noted that he and members of his household have been living in perpetual fear and that his life is currently in danger as the youths acting under instructions could strike or attack him at will.
He further stated that Zik Gbemre threatened to terrorise the community if he fails to change his mind on the chairmanship position of the community, alleging that the group vowed to use persons in authority to set them free or influence the case in court if arrested.
Chief Gbemre, therefore, appealed to the Commissioner of Police to use his good office to bring the persons to book and make them face the wrath of the law.
He alleged that the antecedents of the said Zik Gbemre in the past, who claimed to be a social critic and activist, which he used to intimidate law abiding members of the community and companies operating in the area, has no doubt caused a lot of chaos and disaffection in the community.
