The Supreme Court has stopped the National Assembly from taking further steps towards amending the 1999 Constitution, a report from Abuja said.

The seven-man panel of justices led by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, ordered the National Assembly to maintain the status quo on the matter until June 18, the report said.

The suit was filed by the Federal Government to stop the National Assembly from overriding President Goodluck Jonathan’s veto on amendments to the constitution.

Justice Mohammed specifically warned ‎the warring parties not to do anything that will affect the subject matter of the suit.

The court consequently adjourned the suit to June 18 when a new government will have come on board and the legislative session of the present National Assembly would have ended.
