Nollywood star Victoria Iyama
Enugu State-born Nollywood star now based in London, Victoria Iyama, has said that husbands do rape their wives.
As if reacting to an earlier opinion expressed by her colleague, Anita Joseph where the latter said she does not share in the belief that a husband can rape his wife, Iyama who recently graduated from Lewisham Counseling School of London where she studied couselling, according to her, to be able to aid people mentally, stated emphatically that there are instances husbands do rape their wives.
Hear the social psychology and domestic violence advocate as she speaks on the subject matter which she tags Marital Rape: “Marital rape is a form of domestic violence and sexual abuse. Historically, sex within marriage was regarded as a right of the spouses. But engaging in the act without the spouse’s consent and then penetrating, is now widely classified as rape.”
Continuing, the mother of three said: “Marital rape is more widely experienced by women than men. Cultural practices, religion and societal ideologies contribute to its acceptance. Circumstances do vary, but because it’s a norm doesn’t make it right.”
