About 22 buildings and property worth millions of naira caved into two gully erosion sites at Obeleagu Street and Nkisi Aroli area folĺowing a downpour in the night of May 12, 2020.

As a result, residents of the area have been rendered homeless even as some others sustained varying degrees of injury while scampering for safety.

Mr. Victor Okoye, a resident of the area, lamented that the victims are stranded, saying that some who managed to salvage few of their property have left for another location.

He said: “The victims are stranded. Some have managed to gather some of their properties and left friends and families moving far away from the gully, while others are still looking for how and where to park to.

“We are appealing for government intervention. It is surprising that the federal and state governments had visited here since last year but nothing has happened.”

News Expressreports that in 2019, several buildings were lost in like manner, leaving churches and other public places exposed to the underlining threats.

The duo of Sir Chike Ekweogwu, President of Onitsha Improvement Union, and the Onitsha North Local Government chairman of the Union, Mr Akunne Chuka Odiakosa, while leading a delegation to the scene on Wednesday, called for both state and federal government interventions with a view to assist the affected residents and further as avert future occurrences.
