Some journalists in Awka, Anambra State, were on Tuesday barred from entering the State House of Assembly Complex premises to cover the resumed plenary session.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Emma Madu, the measure was taken to prevent overcrowding and in keeping with the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines on social distancing.
He said: “I was directed by the Clerk (of the Assembly) to compile a list because of Coronavirus. We don’t have enough space for more journalists to enter except those on the list. This is in line with social distancing order.”
With the new protocol in place, security operatives at the entrance of the building have been handed over the names of only seven journalists to be admitted into the premises.
They include correspondents of The Punch, Vanguard, Fides, The Nation, Odenugbo FM, Radio Nigeria, and Purity FM.
The lawmakers had resumed legislative duties following the easing of the lockdown on the state imposed by Governor Willie Obiano to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state.
