Human rights lawyer Ogebe
A US-based human rights group has sent a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the United States Government seeking more information on the latest tranche of over $300 million Abacha loot released last week to the Nigerian Government.
The request by the Washington-based US NIGERIA LAW GROUP was made via a letter dated May 7, 2020, signed by the Managing Partner, international human rights lawyer Emmanuel Ogebe.
Entitled “FOIA REQUEST RE NIGERIA ABACHA LOOT”, the letter was addressed to the Office of Information Programs and Services, U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C. It reads:
“Dear FOIA Officer:
“This is a request filed under the Freedom of Information Act.
“Date range of request: July 1, 2016 through January 30, 2020,” the letter read in part.
News Express reports that Abacha loot refers to stolen funds stashed abroad by late Nigerian despot, General Sani Abacha, who died suddenly in office in 1998. Some Western countries where he looted funds were kept have been returning them in tranches over the past two decades – with many more millions of dollars still to be returned to Nigeria.
