By PAMELA EBOH, Awka
Anambra State Commissioner for Police, Mr. John Abang, has charged all Area Commanders, Divisional Police officers, and other tactical Commanders in the State Police Command to constantly lecture their men on the need to be civil to members of the public.
Addressing the officers during a strategic meeting in Awka, the state boss enjoined them to ensure strict adherence to international best practices when enforcing the lockdown order in the state.
He issued strong directives to all officers and men serving in the Command, saying: “Exercise restraint and avoid use of extreme measures while performing your duties.”
Abang described the ugly incidents in Umunze, Orumba South and Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area of the state as unfortunate but gave assurance that investigations into both incidents have commenced.
Police on patrol on Wednesday shot and killed two youths who were allegedly going home from playing football at Nkpor and shot the tires of a man driving to the bank at Umunze.
While urging residents to remain calm stressing that justice will surely be done, the CP sought the understanding and support of the public for the Police and other Law enforcement agencies in the State, especially at this trying time.
He added: “I urge Ndi Anambra to obey the sit at home order issued by the state government as part of efforts to curb the spread of the Corona virus. I have also directed Officers involved in enforcing the movement restriction order to always recognise after identification and grant access to medical personnel, journalists, social workers, and all other essential service providers and food items as well as other goods and services.
“I assure the state government and good people of Anambra State that the Command under my watch will remain steadfast and committed in the duty of ensuring public safety and security.”
