The Inspector-General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has directed the Special Forces in the police to provide security for officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, (INEC) electoral materials and ad hoc staff during and after the general elections.
The Special Forces has its officers and men drawn from the Special Protection Unit, (SPU) and Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU).
A statement issued by the IGP’s Office yesterday in Abuja and signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Ojukwu, said that the IGP gave the order while appraising the preparations for the general elections during a briefing with senior officers.
“This directive further demonstrates the readiness and the resolve of Nigeria Police Force to protect our nascent democracy and to ensure hitch-free and credible general elections,” Ojukwu said.
According to him, the Police High Command also stated that some of the strategies provided to ensure free and fair polls by the police are already being implemented.
It also allayed the fears of the public before, during and after the general elections, advising them to collaborate with the police and report any suspicious movement in their areas to the nearest police station.
