Robbed again?: Zambia draw match Nigeria almost won . . . 2013 AFCON Day 7

Once more, the Super Eagles sniffed victory at the 29th Africa Cup of nations but, again, it somehow slipped away. However, the Nigerians could be forgiven to claim that they were robbed in a match they deserved to win.

Last Monday in their first match against Burkina Faso, the cry was that defence man Efe Ambrose did not deserve to be red carded. This evening against defending champions Zambia in Nelspruit, South Africa, the Super Eagles were the better side and dominated possession.

What would have been an early goal was lost by Mikel Obi, who booted wide in the 25th minute after Ahmed Musa was brought down in the Chipolopolo’s vital area by Nkausu to win Nigeria a penalty.

Shortly on the restart vibrant marksman Emmanuel Emenike – who also accounted for the goal against Burkina Faso – found the mark in the 65th minute after being fed by Mikel upon robbing an opponent of the ball.

Hopes of a victory however petered out when referee Ghead inexplicably awarded the Chipolopolo a penalty for a soft challenge on Mayuka in the 18-yard line (not inside the box) in the 82nd minute. Skipper-goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene stepped forward and gave Vincent Enyeama no chance.

The result still see both sides at par with two points apiece while awaiting the outcome of the match between Ethiopia and Burkina Faso.

The way it is, both the Eagles are favoured and Chipolopolo remain favourites to qualify from the group.
