The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has confirmed the arrest and detention of 20 suspects in connection with the recent attack on the convoy of Governor Godswill Akpabio’s convoy in Oron. Briefing newsmen yesterday in Uyo, the State Police Commissioner, Mr. Gabriel Achong, disclosed that “about 20 suspects are cooling off at police cell as a result of the attack, undergoing interrogation.”
News Express learnt that the governor’s convoy was ambushed and attacked by some opponents’ party miscreants, after a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial campaign rally of Mr. Udom Emmanuel at Oron Township Stadium.
The unprovoked assault on the governor’s convoy resulted in injuries to some security personnel and some innocent PDP supporters on the convoy, as well as damage to vehicles.
Achong described the spate of attacks on opponents by opposition party hoodlums at party rallies in the state as “unacceptable.” He warned that the police command would no longer condone such politically motivated attacks on party opponents in the on-going political campaigns in the state.
The State Police Commissioner also recalled and condemned the incident of two days ago, where some miscreants reportedly scaled over the Oron Township Stadium fence during a rally by the All Progressives Congress (APC), and allegedly set two vehicles ablaze in addition to destroying canopies at the venue.
He warned those engaged in such acts of hooliganism to “have a rethink and desist forthwith,” pointing out that “politics is not a do-or-die affair.”
