Unknown gunmen yesterday attacked the All Progressives Congress (APC) office in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State in Nigeria’s South-South region, barely a month to the beginning of the February 2015 general elections in the country. Okrika is the home town of Nigeria’s First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan.
Reports say that the attackers injured three members of the party as they prepared for a rally in Rumueme, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The APC Chairman in Okrika Local Government Area, Mr. Christian Asifamaka, said that the attackers threw a dynamite into the party office.
Asifamaka, who said that his office was the worst hit as the entire wall was pulled down by the explosion, revealed that the incident occurred at exactly 3:14 a.m. in Abam Ama community.
“The All Progressives Congress in Okrika views this latest attack as a deliberate provocation by our opponents, the People’s Democratic Party, to draw the APC into a battle that would destabilise our beloved local government area,” the APC chief said.
“This is unfortunate and the APC in Okrika would not allow Okrika to become a hotbed of crises as the PDP would wish,” he added.
