US charges 2 men to court over coup against Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh

Two men have been charged in the US with attempting to overthrow The Gambia’s President Yahya Jammeh, the BBC has reported, quoting the US Justice Department.

Cherno Njie, 57, and Papa Faal, 46, will appear in court on accusations of conspiring against a friendly nation and conspiring to possess firearms, the report said.

The failed coup reportedly took place on December 30 when Jammeh was abroad but wa foiled by loyal troops.

Jammeh has ruled the tiny West African country since seized power in 1994.
