President Goodluck Jonathan this morning talked tough in his New Year Message, vowing to crush Boko Haram and to also deal decisively with people who attempt to foment trouble in connection with the 2015 general elections.
“I want to assure you that terrorists will not win. They will be routed; they’ll be defeated. That is the solemn commitment I make today as the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces,” Jonathan said in a 17-minute broadcast to the nation.
He highlighted his administration’s achievements mainly in the area of infrastructural development, saying that the country’s economy remains on the path of growth. “We will continue to lay the foundation for a vibrant economy,” the President said.
He promised that despite 2015 being an election year, politics will not distract his administration from the task of providing good governance.
Jonathan also pledged to conduct “free, fair and credible elections,” saying: “My administration’s commitment to one man one vote remains unwavering.”
He advised politicians and their supporters to eschew violence as “none of our political ambition is worth the blood of our countrymen, women and children.”
The President pointedly warned that “this government will act decisively against anyone who foments trouble before, during or after the elections.”
He made a strong case for democracy across the African continent and wished Nigerians a happy new year.
