SPECIAL FEATURE: 5 artistes to look out for in 2020, By Itty Okim

The Nigerian music scene has in 2019 witnessed discovery and establishment of new artistes in the Afropop, Afrobeat, Trap and Blues genres.

This year alone, artistes like Rema, Fireboy, Joeboy, Oxlade and the rest of them found their feet in the industry.

There has been better acceptance of Afrobeats, many artistes and songs have gained international recognition and so much more is still yet to unfold.

Here, however, is a list of Nigerian artistes to look out for in 2020.

1. Oxlade

Oxlade is a young singer who hustled his way from being a ˜star in Surulere “ a Lagos suburb “ to performing at Wizkids Starboy Fest, a sold-out show at the O2 Arena in London.

Oxlade has done several songs, some of which include ˜Mamiwota by Blaqbonez, ˜Causing Trouble by DJ Tunez, his biggest hit so far titled ˜Shugar, amongst others.

He is a really promising independent artiste and 2020 will definitely be a big year for him.

2. Wizkid

There have been rumours of Wizkid not putting out many projects in 2019 due to the fact that he is preparing for a really huge 2020.

These rumours seem to hold water because Wizkid really didnt do so much this year. We look forward to massive projects from this international star come next year. Our fingers are crossed.

3. WurlD

He practically stole the airwaves in 2019. WurlD has not been too long in the industry but his efforts have had massive impacts in his career.

He bagged the Headies Male Vocalist of 2019 award and that took him on a huge leap as it exposed him the more to the global industry.

After the award, the artiste who is signed to Universal Music Nigeria has been featured by several top artistes, the latest being Davido in ˜Sweet In The Middle, a song of Davidos ˜A Good Time album.

4. Rema

Also known as Remmy Boy, this young singer has been pulling boss moves since he came into limelight in May 2019. Considering his technical pro-PR actions and all the credible work he has been dropping, the future seems really bright for the lad.

Divine Ikubor (real name) was born in Benin, Edo State, and started music at a very tender age by forming a duo with young rapper Alpha P, who is now signed under Universal Music. He was discovered by DPrince of Mavin Records and he is currently signed under Jonzing World.

5. Odunsi “ The Engine

Odunsi is a foremost singer and Alté Movement personality. He stole the heart of Nigerians with his ˜Rare album in which artistes like Santi (formerly Ozzy B), Zamir and the rest of the Alté guys.

With a successful 2019, the coming year seems like it will favour this young act. We look forward to an Alternative 2020.
