22 years after: Real cause of Fela’s death — Close ally

Afro beat maestro, Fela Anikulapo Kuti died in 1997 amidst different insinuations as to the cause of his death.

But his stooge, actor and singer Dede Mabiaku in a recent interview with Object TV Media claimed Fela confided in him the likely cause of his death before he gave up the ghost.

The University of Benin theater arts graduate whose parents reportedly disowned him because of his association with Fela said:

I don wait tire people no talk this thing and I no know why. Because me I remember clearly when Fela tell me and Seun say ˜ah dem chook me something o, be like say dem chook me something for hia! That matter nobody talk this matter since 22 years now.

It would be recalled that the Afro beat King was severally brutalised, detained, and at a time jailed, by the military junta because of his incisive songs which criticised the authorities then.

Speaking further, Dede made reference to the currently detained #RevolutionNow convener, Omoyele Sowore when he said:

So when me I con hear say den say dem chook Sowore something¦I dont know. But me I know say Fela tell me sha and he tell Seun and this one na true talk. Later, we started seeing the degenerating state of his health, we started seeing the level at which things dropped, and we all know how it ended.

Dede Mabiaku is an Afrobeat, Highlife & Jazz musician. For more than 10 years, he was an integral part of Felas daily life and his band Egypt 80. Dede opened all Felas local and international shows, performing on vocals and playing the saxophone.
