Special Feature: Was The Headies 2019 a flop?

Beginning with the nominations, Nigerians on social media complained that the categorising of nominees at The Headies Award this year was biased, partial and very arguable.

The event which was held at the Eko Convention Center in Lagos on Saturday, October 19 was said to also record a low turnout.

In addition, according to popular preferences, many of the awardees did not deserve to be nominated at the Headies, talk more be recipients of awards.

Considering all of these, can it be tagged a flop?

Many are of the opinion that the value and repute of the formerHip-hop World Awardhas been depreciating over the years as the annual event has a record of most times being poorly organised.

This is probably the reason many artistes (including some of the awardees) didn't think twice before forgoing Hip TV’s Headies Award for Wizkid’s Starboy Fest held at the O2 Arena in London, UK on the same night.

Some major names absent at the Headies but present at Starboy Fest include street king Olamide alongside the rest of the YBNL Mafia Family; Wizkid; Naira Marley; Headies Artiste of the Year, Burna Boy; Afropop queen Tiwa Savage and Mavin boss, Don Jazzy.

According to popular music writer Joey Akan, “The glory of the Headies Awards is a past one. The reason Nigerians still talk about it is because they have a sentimental attachment. Asides that, there’s nothing else.”

How true is this? Was The Headies a flop? What exactly is Hip TV doing wrongly?
