Club record signing Joelintons first goal in English football on Sunday afternoon gave Newcastle United a surprise win at Tottenham “ and Steve Bruce his first Premier League points as their manager.
The Brazilian striker took advantage of sleepy Tottenham defending to control substitute Christian Atsus through pass beautifully before drilling past Hugo Lloris.
Atsu, sent on after Allan Saint-Maximin had to go off with an early hamstring injury, provided the assist with his first significant contribution.
Spurs lacked the creativity to break down a resolute Newcastle side, whose four-man midfield spent a large chunk of the contest sitting deep in front of a back five.
Son Heung-min, making his first Tottenham appearance of the season after completing a three-match suspension, saw a bouncing first-half volley beaten away by Martin Dubravka, then rolled a shot wide shortly before the interval.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino sent on Christian Eriksen and Giovani lo Celso for the final half-hour in an attempt to salvage something from the 500th match of his managerial career.
It almost worked: Lo Celsos pass for Harry Kane ended with the England captain falling under Jamaal Lascelles challenge “ but Mike Dean ruled it was not a penalty, and was backed up by the check from video assistant referee (VAR) Anthony Taylor.
Then Eriksens superb diagonal pass gave Moussa Sissoko the room to cross low, but Lucas Moura skied his shot over the bar from around eight yards.
Earlier in the afternoon Sergio Aguero scored twice as reigning champions Manchester City moved up to second in the Premier League with a convincing victory at Bournemouth.
Despite the odd defensive lapse, it was a largely comfortable afternoon for Pep Guardiolas side, who are now two points behind leaders Liverpool.
His City team quickly established control, with Argentina forward Aguero turning Kevin de Bruynes cross into the bottom left corner from eight yards.
And Raheem Sterling doubled their advantage with his fifth goal in as many matches, flicking a shot beyond Cherries keeper Aaron Ramsdale after a fine David Silva pass.
While Bournemouth rallied and substitute Harry Wilsons superb 25-yard free-kick raised hopes of a fight-back, Aguero pounced for Citys third after more good work from Silva.
The 31-year-old emphatically finished from 10 yards to record his 400th career goal.
It ensured Bournemouth, who drop to 10th place, continued a miserable run against City that has seen them concede 28 times in their last nine league meetings.
