Akwa Ibom girls set to take to the streets over female genital mutilation

Feelers reachingMaggie’s Bloghave it that hundreds of teenage girls in Akwa Ibom State are planning to take to the streets of Uyo, the state capital, in a peaceful protest against female genital mutilation.

The campaign, according to a close source, is to draw the attention of those in authorities to already existing laws against the age-long practice which, unfortunately, has continued unabated in some parts of the oil-rich state in particular and the country at large.

“The girls mean business’ they want to storm the state capital in a peaceful protest. They can’t understand why such barbaric practice should be allowed to continue in this 21st century, more so when it has been outlawed,” our source added.

Meanwhile, information has it that the girls have already approached the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Commissioner of Police and other top dignitaries in the state for moral support.

Stay tuned toMaggie’s Blogfor update on this event which promises to be historic.
