17 days to 2013 South Africa Cup of Nations: I am FIT and READY —MIKEL

Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has declared he is fit for the 29th South Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa after a slight knee complaint.

Mikel was pulled off late in the second half of an EPL game against Norwich City after he suffered a knock on his knee.

He has however told MTNFootball.com that he is as fit as fiddle and ready for action to pour cold water over speculations regarding his availability for this month’s AFCON.

“I am going to be at Nations Cup as there is nothing to worry about concerning the injury, it is over,” Mikel said.

“I am okay and fit for action. I am already looking forward to play in the FA Cup game against Southampton. I was advised by the doctor to rest it for the QPR game, otherwise I was ready to play,” he added.

Mikel (see photo) restated his promise that he will be at the Eagles training camp in Faro, Portugal, on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles’a coach Stephen Keshi has saluted his team for holding their own against Catalonia, who paraded several top Barcelona stars in last night’s friendly match.

The Eagles forced a Catalonia selection who featured the likes of Xavi, Gerrard Pique and Carles Puyol to a 1-1 draw as part of their build-up for this month’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Keshi said he expects a fierce competition for squad places before he finally announces his final 23-man squad for the AFCON. His words:

“It was a great game. I must commend the players because they played to instructions. The purpose of this friendly was to try out some formations and tactics and not to win at all cost, but knowing the pedigree and quality of our opponents and so the boys gave their all and I must commend them for this and also Nigerians for their prayers.

“Again I needed to see that reaction from the (home-based) players in a game like this and I must commend them because they lived up to expectation. It’s a test and confidence-building game and the boys from back home needed this more.”
