The University of Jos (UNIJOS) in the Plateau State capital in North-Central Nigeria community was thrown into pandemonium on yesterday following invasion of the institution by gunmen, who killed an inspector of police and a corporal, who were on guard at the university.
The gunmen, about 15 in number, swooped on the security men at the permanent site of the university on Monday, at about 11:00 p.m. and opened fire on them at random.
A security man at the scene of the incident, who escaped by the whiskers, said immediately they had killed the two men, the gunmen escaped in their car.
The killing created pandemonium within the university community, forcing both the students and other people living within the vicinity to scamper for safety.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Abuh, confirmed the incident, adding that full investigation had commenced.
Meanwhile, the Special Task Force has placed citizens of the state on red alert, following reports of strange movements with the state capital.
Reports said already, over 80 strange faces, suspected to have been contracted to perpetrate evil in the state, had been arrested in Rikkos area of Jos North.
STF spokesman, Captain Iwehe Ikedichi, confirmed that those arrested are nationals of Niger Republic, stressing that they were on investigation.
Ikedichi said citizens of Nigeria, who were among those arrested, had been investigated and discharged.
He confirmed that in the wake of the arrest, there were attacks in some villages in Riyom Local Government Area of the state, resulting in the death of many, including some military personnel.
